PTSD in emergency workers.

I have recently completed some consulting work in relation to management of Workcover mental health claims in a subset of emergency workers. I have also seen numerous emergency workers for Independent Psychiatric Examinations including in relation to Fitness for Duty. It is definitely a thorny area, in which one has to strike a delicate balance in terms of optimising occupational recovery (which assists overall prognosis,) managing the specific risks of this population and reducing likelihood of retraumatisation. I am extremely pleased that there are now Australian evidence-based guidelines in relation to this. I am impressed with the thoughtfulness of these guidelines and their focus on recovery. I would recommend those in the area familiarise themselves with the guidelines. I think there is an added onus on clinicians to be demonstrating that they are engaging in best-practise, especially those providing psychological therapy.
